After graduating with an economics degree in 1973, Jane Podkolinski joined the СÓŶÌÊÓƵ as a trainee public finance accountant. After a year of training Jane decided to find out more about the service she was training to manage by taking a nursing auxiliary job on a ward. This experience altered the course of her career and Jane retrained as a nurse and then midwife. She moved to Salisbury in 1981, and joined the maternity services as a bank midwife. Over the course of the next 31 years she did a variety of jobs within the service, including teaching student midwives in the unit and at Bournemouth University. For 17 years she had a clinical lead role on the labour ward and the last 6 years of her career she was a labour ward manager. To support her various roles Jane completed a Masters degree in Midwifery, and Postgraduate Diplomas in Education and Management. Since retirement in 2012, she has taken on a variety of volunteer roles, including Volunteer Co-ordinator for Wiltshire Creative and ward volunteer at the hospital.
